What’s My Blog About?

I write about all the different aspects and facets of life as a man who is nearing retirement.

I am a Generation Xer. I walked home from school alone, arrived at an empty house and learned to cook boiled eggs and rice for an after school meal. I learned how to type, sew, cook and change car oil or a flat tire in my Shop classes.

I was shy as a child so I secretly yearned to be one of those casual talkers who could speak to anyone about anything at any time. I read everything I could get my hands on about small talk, conversations, and staying up on current events so I could participate in the discussion. I ingested how-to articles in magazines like there was no tomorrow. I wanted to be a great speaking like Tony Robbins, one of my public speaking heroes.

My father and mother were both extremely hard workers with deep rooted work ethics , so I follow in their footsteps. I had this inner driver for perfection but I was never sure how to activate it, achieve it and benefit from it.

Still, I knew I was different from most kids. I was always considered “the smart one” although high school showed me that I had a long way to go. I nev er bought into the 9-to-5 American Dream. I wanted to do and have my own thing, which at the time, was writing.

Coincidentally, used to tease my parents about leaving them and going “back” to California to be with my real family. It used to piss my father off. Inside of me there was always something that believed there was more to this world than the five blocks in South Jamaica, Queens that I lived on. I was a heavy ready and I convinced my mom to subscribe to weekly book memberships. Books taught me that the world was big and full of different people and different experiences.
